Solvang LGC new-builds – Fuel efficient and custom designed
Solvang has ordered from Hyundai Heavy Industries two LGC vessels (60,000 cbm), with a third optional vessel declarable within 6 months. The two firm vessels will be delivered in March and May 2015, and the optional vessel has delivery in July 2015.
The vessels are based on a new hull and engine design, significantly improving fuel efficiency compared to existing vessels. Furthermore, Solvang has in cooperation with Hyundai done extensive work on the vessels physical parameters and technical systems, to better customize the vessels for the intended trade. This will enhance the competitive advantage of the new vessels.
The vessel are prepared for full scale exhaust gas cleaning system (scrubber); a system that will remove 95 % of the SOx and 85 % of the particles emissions. This exhaust gas cleaning system will enable the vessels to operate on one type of fuel (low cost, high quality heavy fuel oil), and therefore avoid the risky fuel changeover operations which is the alternative in 2015, where all vessels operating within Europe and US are forced to use low sulphure fuel (< 0,1 %S). So the exhaust gas cleaning system gives an environmentally friendly, safe and above all a cost effective vessel.
The exhaust gas cleaning is one part of a series of techniques for making the vessel as efficient, economic and as green as possible. Solvang Vessel Performance Monitoring system reveals that our last new-build has approximately 40 % lower fuel consumption, and 6 0% lower NOx emissions than the vessels built 35 years ago. Furthermore the new-build is estimated to have 15 % better fuel efficiency compared to similar modern vessels, while the NOx reduction is estimated to around 30 % compared to Solvang’s most fuel efficient vessel today. Compared with our 35 year old tonnage, which now is scrapped, the coming vessels have reduced the fuel consumption with approximately 55 %, thereby also reducing CO2 emissions by 55 %, and more than 70% reduction in NOx emmisions.
